V for Victor(y), F for Fay, it's not an old saying but a new one to be remembered in the future. Thank you for asking me to write some words on this remarkable CD. Remarkable for the bright lights Fay lets shine on standards everybody likes, but too many times have been recorded in the old routine. No routine at all this time. Spontaneous like a live recording but controlled by the rich sound of a music studio - also a remarkable combination. I don't like name dropping and there's no reason for it because Fay has her own style. It's always easy to produce names of important jazz vocalists and write down Fay swings like... has the feel of... learned the blues from... etc.
When I hear Fay sing, I'm sure she did her homework listening to the great voices, not to copy a style but building up her own style with all the ingredients that make jazz a unique form of art. Her timing of the musical phrases are superimposed over the regular phrases and the out-of-meter timing against the basic timing make you think these songs were jazz originals, but we know most of them were written for musicals. This way of making music with a wide range of ideas and driving appeal is the way to make real musicians willing and enthusiastic to do a recording. Nearly every number is in a different arrangement and to my surprise All Of You only with the bass. Maybe next time Fay will change the lyrics "I love the looks of you" to "I love the sound of you". I think love is the reason for staying in Amsterdam and we are also lucky to have Fay in the area so the New York jazz fans have to learn to live without her.
