Part of notes by Jeroen de Valk:
“He has the endurance of a marathon runner, the ears of an African elephant, the social
skills of a diplomat and more knowledge of jazz history than a ten-part encyclopedia can hold. But, most of all, pianist Rein de Graaff swings like a madman and at the same time manages to be in complete control of himself.
All of this makes him an ideal accompanist for many mainstream jazz soloist, and rein indeed paid his dues as a sideman for over forty years. He doesn’t perform much outside the European continent, but “The Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD”just couldn’t ignore him: “de Graaff is a fine, responsive accompanist who will go to his grave with a bent back from having carried so many visiting ‘singles’over the years.”
After being heard on dozens of records featuring American giantsor his own groups, De Graaff ( 1942 ) started to produce his own compilations with material from his huge archive.
After “Now Is The Time ( CDSJP 465 )”and “Confirmation ( CDSJP 471 ) , this record is the third of this series. The title, once again, is a Charlie Parker classic: “Ornithology” !
